BORDERCROSSING

Borders make a difference: while some people can cross borders without any difficulty, for others they constitute almost insurmountable obstacles. But borders do not simply cease to exist once national borders are crossed: the function of the border to control and regulate movement is today enforced in many places. To use a popular image: the fortress Europe is also guarded inside its battlements. Borders create illegality, and sometimes surprising possibilities open up within this illegality. Sometimes, however, the tourist visa is the best option. Strategies and backgrounds of legal and illegal border crossings are considered in this unit.
